Oh To Be Wise Meditations
The poverty of wealth. Riches won’t help on the day of judgment, but right living can save you from death. When God is angry, money won't help you. Obeying God is the only way to be saved from death. Treasures gained by wickedness do not profit, but righteousness delivers from death. What you gain by doing evil won't help you at all. Obeying God is the only way to be saved from death. Why should I be afraid in times of trouble, when I am surrounded by vicious enemies? They trust in their riches and brag about all their wealth. You cannot buy back your life or pay off God! It costs far too much to buy back your life. You can never pay God enough to keep us from the grave, to let us live forever. We see that wise people die, and so do stupid fools. Then their money is left for someone else. Their graves are their permanent homes, their dwellings from generation to generation, though they have named estates after themselves. People, despite their wealth, do not endure; they are like the beasts that perish. See what happens to those who trust in themselves, the fate of those who are satisfied with their wealth. They are like sheep with death as their shepherd, leading them to the grave. In the morning God's people will walk all over them, as their bodies lie rotting in their home, the grave. But as for me, God will redeem my life. He will snatch me from the power of the grave. So don’t be dismayed when the wicked grow rich and their homes become ever more splendid. For when they die, they take nothing with them. Their wealth will not follow them into the grave. In this life they consider themselves fortunate and are applauded for their success. They will join those who have gone before them, who will never again see the light of life. If you get rich by charging interest and taking advantage of people, your wealth will go to someone who is kind to the poor. Jesus paid the penalty plus interest for our sins by his blood. He is giving the riches and blessings of his Kingdom to the poor in spirit. Theirs is the kingdom of heaven, for the pure in heart will see God.
