Oh To Be Wise Meditations

Don’t long for “the good old days.” It isn't wise to ask, "Why is everything worse than it used to be?" The story of Gideon in the Bible gives us wisdom about how to do deal with thoughts that rise within us. Listen to what Gideon says: Gideon answered, "Please don't take this wrong, but if the LORD is helping us, then why have all of these awful things happened? We've heard how the LORD performed miracles and rescued our ancestors from Egypt. But those things happened long ago. Now the LORD has abandoned us to the Midianites." From heaven the LORD looks down to see if anyone is wise enough to search for him. It is not wise to think only about the past. Do not say always that the past was better than the present. The Israelite's thought about how things were in Egypt. But they remembered only the good food that they had enjoyed there (Numbers 11:5-6). They forgot all the things that they had suffered there as slaves. The things that were evil in the past may be different for people now. But each age has difficulties and problems. When people think only about the past, they do not do anything in the present. And they do not appreciate what is good in the present times. Remember the things I have done in the past. For I alone am God! I am God, and there is none like me.I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come. I say, 'My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please.' “From eternity to eternity I am God. No one can snatch anyone out of my hand. No one can undo what I have done.” What a person desires is unfailing love; better to be poor than a liar. LORD, let me not be a liar and disregard the blessing of Knowing you in the present. The past is the past and the future is in your hands. I must live thankful to God and remain loyal to Him. Let me not grieve away the Holy Spirit by holding on to bitterness. Jesus has so much for us to do now in the moment. He told Gideon, “The LORD is with you, O mighty man of valor.” Then the LORD himself said, "Gideon, you will be strong, because I am giving you the power to rescue Israel from the Midianites." I am sending you.
