A rebuke cuts into a man of discernment deeper than a hundred lashes cut into a fool. So, tell me the truth. Give it to me straight and let it cut deep to make an impression in me. Don't sugar coat it and don't be tolerant of my hypocrisy. If I seem distant and distraught, keep looking for me till I am found. If I am angry listen to me. If I am in doubt encourage me. When I succeed be happy for me. And when I fail pick me up to try again. Don't just be my friend be a brother close by. I hope you speak highly of me to others and rebuke me when I gossip about others. Spend time with me and ask me the hard questions of life. Ask me if I need help even if you know I will say no. Challenge me to be a man of God. Hold me accountable for the words I say and forgive me for the words I didn't say. Tell me the truth and save my life. All I ask is that you salve it up with love when you do it. Yes, cover me with loving kindness as you give me a gentle answer that deflects my anger. Show me loving grace when I am so hard on myself. When you correct me with Scripture a two-edged sword, please encourage me away from worldly sorrow. Praise God, the commandment you share is a lamp to me and it's teaching a light. Let your reproofs of discipline remind me of the way of life in Christ. Oh, let the godly strike me! It will be a kindness! If they correct me, it is soothing medicine. Don’t let me refuse it. But I pray constantly against the wicked and their deeds. Listen, I can trust a friend who corrects me, but kisses from an enemy are nothing but lies. A man has joy in giving an appropriate answer, and how good and delightful is a word spoken at the right moment. Oh, how good it is a loving rebuking to a desperate soul! Reflect on these Scriptures as I close. Let Holy Spirit speak: If anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. If anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone brings him back, let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins. Correct a worthless bragger, and all you will get are insults and injuries. Any bragger you correct will only hate you. But if you correct someone who has common sense, you will be loved. If you have good sense, instruction will help you to have even better sense. And if you live right, education will help you to know even more.
