Week 3: Chapter 8
Judges 8:1-12
Day one topic: Keep pursuing. Don’t stop. Don’t ever stop!
In chapter 8, we learn that we should be careful. And we should remember the good things that other people have done. Ephraim’s *tribe wanted a quarrel. Perhaps they did not like the fact that Gideon had not called them to fight. Perhaps they wanted a share from the goods that the soldiers had taken after the battle. Gideon gave a gentle answer. He told Ephraim’s *tribe that their efforts had been much greater than his efforts. Contrast the way that Jephthah gave an answer to that same *tribe (Judges 12:1-3).
In these verses, the writer continues the story from Judges 7:25. Gideon and his men did not have much strength. But they continued to chase the army that had come from Midian. Gideon’s 300 men had increased to 1500 men. So they were now a force that could fight against Midian’s army. The people in Succoth refused to help him, because Midian’s kings Zebah and Zalmunna were still free. The people in Succoth were afraid of Midian’s people. If the people in Succoth helped Gideon, then Midian’s people might attack them. That is why they were afraid. So Gideon became more cruel. He made this promise. He would make Succoth’s people suffer pain because they had refused to help. Gideon would do this when he returned. The men in Peniel also refused to help. Peniel was the place where Jacob fought the *angel (Genesis 32:24-30). There was a *tower there. People could escape to the *tower in an emergency. Gideon said that he would destroy the *tower.
Little becomes much when placed in the masters hand.
Suit up in the armour of God and continue in the battle of faith. Walk in the victory.

Many people are jealous of hard workers. Most think that just talent should be recognized. But it’s the hard worker that usually get the bad rap and judged harshly.
United in the Spirit. There are some that dress like ballers at the rec league. They look like they could ball out but they could not even get out of the first game in victory. We judge by the eye. But a good team runs the court. United team that knows each other and knows the LORD is better than talent and wealth.
The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Psalms 23:1-6
Succoth and Peniel are Israelite cities, the eastern portion of land assigned to the tribes of Gad and Manasseh. Rather than helping their brothers fight the common enemy as is their covenant responsibility as fellow Israelites, they are withholding aid until they make sure that the Midianites are thoroughly trounced. They are taking no chances with the Midianites. But in doing so they are committing a terrible breach of hospitality to their own kinsmen and a grave sin against the God of the Covenant.
Gideon promises to punish them, and, by the standards of the time, they certainly deserve it. But now we begin to see a darker and vindictive side to Gideon, a characteristic that becomes full blown terror in his son Abimelech (Judges 9). "Tear" in 8:7 is the Hebrew word dish, "tread, thresh."3 He will punish them like the oxen that trample the grain on the threshing floor.
