Oh To Be Wise Meditations

Every person should obey the government in power. No government would exist if it hadn't been established by God. The governments which exist have been put in place by God. People who oppose the authorities are opposing what God has done, and they will be punished. Rulers are a threat to evil people, not to good people. There is no need to be afraid of the authorities. Just do right, and they will praise you for it. After all, they are God's servants, and it is their duty to help you. If you do something wrong, you ought to be afraid, because these rulers have the right to punish you. They are God's servants who punish criminals to show how angry God is. For this reason you must obey the authorities not just because of God's punishment, but also as a matter of conscience. The LORD gave his life to free us from every kind of sin, to cleanse us, and to make us his very own people, totally committed to doing good deeds. Whether the authority in power is good or bad, we must continue as Christians to live righteously before God and our neighbor. Pay your obligations to everyone: taxes to those you owe taxes, revenue to those you owe revenue, respect to those you owe respect, and honor to those you owe honor. My fellow neighbor, more than anything else give me equality. I do not want a hand out or your pity. Treat me the way you would want to be treated, in good times and bad. As followers of Christ we are all equal at the Cross. Imagine how we would grow as people, as a society, if we would be devoted to one another in love. Honoring one another above ourselves. It would make governments job easier, and with God's word as law, righteousness and goodness would spread throughout the land. Jesus says love one another as I have loved you. Help me LORD, to love the way you do.
