Proverbs of a 39 yr old man
Wet Cement Year. A newly married man must not be drafted into the army or be given any other official responsibilities. He must be free to spend one year at home, bringing happiness to the wife he has married. Deut. 24:5.
A married man in Israel would be free from military service for the first year after his marriage. Also, he would not work in any other public job. He could stay at home with his wife. Family life was very important in Israel. So the couple must have the chance to have children. That first year of marriage is very important for married couples in general. Indelible marks are made on your marriage early. They’re not very difficult to make, but they’re extremely difficult to change, especially beyond the first year. Thus the wet cement principle. Once the patterns of the marriage are set, change can and does occur, but it may take something like a jackhammer to bring it about. That is why God gave the married men of Israel that time to establish family and life. I actually want to tie this idea one with Christ being our first love. The same way a married man and woman needed to take time early on in there marriage to please one another and establish a godly foundation of love and truth. So we are called in the same way with our relationship with God in Christ. We love because he first loved us. So many eager believers came to God giddy in his presence. Couldn't wait to read his word and pray to Jesus. But as time went by, yes the wet cement year where we were to cultivate Christ's love in our hearts and lives, we did not. Instead of growing closer we went farther and farther from God's presence. Because of the multiplication of wickedness, the love of most people grow cold. Hear this from the LORD: But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first. You don't have as much love as you used to. Look how far you have fallen! Turn back to me and do the works you did at first. Praise God! The years you were to wet cement your love in Christ can still be chiseled down to a heart of flesh that pleases God. For He has given us a spirit of power, love, and sound judgment. Live for his love today and be cemented to Jesus always, the true lover of our souls. Your first love because he loved us first!
